Business Administration Payroll

Employment in this occupational group is projected to increase in the next few years. This is a great time to enter this field because many jobs will become available due to a high level of retiring workers now through 2015.

Entry-level positions often provide considerable potential for advancement. Industry sources indicate that self-managed individuals with strong initiative who are willing to continuously learn new skills and upgrade old ones are the most likely candidates for promotion.

Payroll Administrators are specifically concerned with employee pay and benefits. They maintain employee records (for example, attendance and overtime) and use the records to calculate pay and benefit entitlements. They also prepare and check statements of earnings and provide information to employees on payroll matters, benefit plans and collective agreement terms.

Once education requirements are met, grads can complete and submit the Application for Certification to receive the Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) certification from the Canadian Payroll Association (CPA).

To receive CPA certification, you must be a graduate of the Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) program and must fulfill the following Canadian Payroll Association (CPA) requirements:
  • Effective January 1, 2015, graduates must have at least one year of weighted payroll experience obtained five years before or after the start of the first CPA core course
  • Complete the CPA's Application for Certification
  • Maintain a membership with the CPA
  • Adhere to the CPA's Code of Conduct and Continuing Professional Education requirements
